The New York Pennsylvania Station opened to the public in 1910. Hailed as one of the greatest architectural and engineering achievements of its time it covered almost 8 acres and required underground construction of 16 miles of tunnels. Fifty years on it closed its doors to make way for Madison Square Garden, a high-rise office building and a sports complex.
